The 8 Limbs of YogaIn the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali lays out an eightfold path to enlightenment.
1. Yama 5 ethical standards dealing with the outside world. 2. Niyama 5 standards when dealing with oneself. 3. Asana The physical practice of yoga. 4. Pranayama The practice of breathing, a very cleansing process. 5. Pratyahara The withdrawal of the senses. 6. Dharana Concentration. 7. Dhyana Uninterrupted, one-pointed concentration- meditation. 8. Yamas and NiyamasThe yamas and niyamas are the first two limbs in Patanjali's 8-limbed path. Implementing just one of these into your daily awareness can have a massive impact on your practice.
Yamas 1. Ahimsa- nonviolence 2. Satya- truthfulness 3. Asteya- nonstealing 4. Brahmacharya- sensory control 5. Aparigraha- non-greediness Niyamas 1. Saucha- cleanliness 2. Samtosa- contentment 3. Tapas- austerities 4. Svadhyaya- self-study 5. Ishvara Pranidhana- surrender |
